Adventures in Yard Sale -ing
My mother sent me a check for $25 for my birthday, and then another one for Mother’s Day. It just so happened that our checking account was overdrawn (and it is supposed to be protected AGAINST that, dammit!) so I couldn’t cash them until he got paid. Which happened yesterday. And all this time I had been planning to go yard sale -ing today with that money, since Rick will not allow me to use it for bills. (He says I don’t get enough stuff for myself, and that was for a gift for me, and all that.) And, as it turns out, today was the BEST day for that! I got some super duper awesome deals I am so HAPPY, HAPPY, HAPPY about!
All the following pics can be clicked on to see a bigger size.
The first place we stopped at, I got a food processor and the last place we stopped at I got this cute little two cup tea maker, $5 each:
(These weren’t the best deals though.) The second place we stopped, I got this entire box of books for $10.
These are different sets of children’s American history books, from the late fifties and early sixties. I think it will be interesting to compare what kind of things are being omitted/changed in the ones that are much more recent.
Then, at the next one, I got this entire box of sewing type stuff for $1!!!!!
There are 12 unopened packages of cross stitch fabric (not easy to find anymore as it is) and they run like $2 -$5 new. She had them marked for 10 cents each. T hen there were two bags full of buttons. And three bags full of lace trim and bias tape ribbon. And a bag of bobbins for bobbin lace making. (Something that I have been wanting to get into!
) Plus that nifty little clear box it came in. (With the lid, even though that isn’t in the pic.)
The next place we stopped, I hit the JACKPOT! I got this:
for only $3!!! I didn’t even know what it was at first, I just thought it was a mixer. It turns out it is an Oster Regency Kitchen Center, and apparently they were made back in the ’70s. It is a mixer, blender, food processor and a meat grinder (YAY, now I can grind up deer meat myself!!!). I was looking around about this thing on the ‘net because the beaters and dough mixer thingies were missing. It seems this baby can STILL fetch around $100! I got such a good deal! I also got, at the same place, this handy little coffee maker that you just pour hot water through the top of.
Only 25 cents.
This will be good for when the power goes out. And then, lastly, my dear son spent some of his hard earned allowance ($4 of it) on this electric massage thing for Rick for an early Father’s Day present.
And then at the next place, Jake got the steal. He got this remote control TV set for $4!
And I got this box of books for $1.
Each of them is from the late teens early twenties. I love old books! (She had them marked 50 cents each, LOL) Then we headed on to the flea market they have every Saturday across from where the state fair is in Fairlea. And there again, we REALLY, and I mean REALLY SERIOUSLY hit the jackpot! This guy said he had bought all this stuff at auction, had no idea if it worked or not, wanted to get rid of it. It was really hot by this time, and most of the people selling stuff were packing to go. Rick saw this box of stuff and asked how much he wanted. He said $3. This was all the stuff in that box:
Yup. ALL THAT. (Click on the pic to see a bigger size of it.) And for only $3. My kids think it’s Christmas all over again. And then he pointed to another box full of games and DVDs and said he’d throw that in for another $3. This is what was in that:
And lastly, he gave us these three bean bags for $1. (That’s $1 for all three, not each!)
We stopped at another one where Rick got this bow case for $3 for Jake.
Today was such a great day!

That’s awesome! I want to go to a yard sale now
Holy freaking crap, that’s a major score!
The meat grinder alone was enough to get me excited. Deer burgers!!!!
It looks like it was a great day. I haven’t been to yard sells in a very long time. I used to enjoy going to them with my mom when I was younger.
@sonnigenmai -
They can be addictive!
@Ghillies_guide - I KNOW!!! I can’t wait to make some! All those game systems and the game boy was such a cool find too! Jake was so happy that he now has a tv and game system in his room. LOL
@Erika_Steele - I think this is something we are going to begin doing much more often, now.
Tee hee hee
I stopped at 4 garage sales today, but didn’t find much. I did get a set of new, still in the plastic single bed sheets for $5.00. Soounds like you did great!
wow. you are one serious yard shopper! I want to buy a yard…and I don’t mean a measely 36inches. A yard. with grass maybe. and a tree. with apples on it. yep. that’s the kind of yard sale I want! good for you Samantha. grind up that deer meat…I once traded my broken down car for a 1/4 deer…was totally worth it too. I heard deer meat can contain disease and am now afraid of butchering a deer. There’s so many laying around on the sides of the road….maybe I’ll wait for a black bear…I love bear meat.
